To Catch a Predator

I've really been wanting to do a "Predator" painting for a while now just because I've never drawn one before. I had a lot of fun making this and surprisingly it only took me about 3 hours to do it. As usual it's hand painted with watercolor paints by NO!

Okay.  So it's been a while.  Give me a break.  Work on The Spider has been pretty time consuming.  Anyway, here is the image I've done for the "Pulp character in black and white and one color" theme from waaay back.  I chose Lobster Johnson, who is a pulp character created by Mike Mignola in the pages of Hellboy.  In the background is a mummy about to do something terrible I guess.  I thought it looked good.  And I really wanted to draw a mummy for some reason.  I almost did Francesco Francavilla's Black Beetle, but decided on this instead. I could not help but do this one also in full color so that's up here too.

A little background:  A lot of research actually went into this.  I wanted this to be as accurate to the time period as possible.  The Mummy was easy compared to all the items with Lobster Johnson I had to find.  The goggles are actually vintage polaroid 1944 WWII pilot flight goggles.  If you look real close you can actually see a knob in between the lenses for turning to change the color intensity of the lenses.  I guess these were used quite a bit and actually have the same kind of reflective lenses I was looking for so I used them as a reference.  I obviously had to modify the their shape quite a bit but it worked out well.  I have an actual black leather flight cap so that's in there as well.  I looked up and actual WWII ammo belt and then also looked up those WWII gas canisters you see on there as well.  The gun is acurate for the time period as well but I can't remember its name.  The pants are calvary pants, I looked up General Patton for reference on those since I remembered he wore those.  Also--usually Lobster Johnson is depicted with a big belt buckle on his belt, but I remembered that the BPRD agents have those red beacons on there belts today and thought since LB was one of the first BPRD agents why not add that to his belt.  Maybe he's the one that came up with the idea?  I made his jacket a little tighter than usual (not TOO tight but you get my meaning) but that's the way I like it.  The glowing lobster mark on his left hand is my favorite part.

We'll see what I can get to next.  I think Fire and Ice was next...

We've been waiting for you Miss O'Neal

I figured most everyone would be doing a Ninja Turtle so I went for the nosiest reporter since Lois Lane: April O'Neal. Inspired by the art of Dave Rapoza who has done some amazing TMNT work.
Hand painted with RED and BLACK sumi ink.

COOL WORLD 20 years later (Revised)

The other version seemed kinda boring, so I went back in and touched it up a bit. ;)

Batman Returns (1992)

This week's theme as chosen by myself is to pick a character(s) or movie from 20 years ago. I am not saying it was the most influential movie of 1992 nor was it better than the original but I still love the hell out of "Batman Returns" when it came out back in the day. I watched it countless times as well as played the video game. I couldn't decide on which character to draw so I at least did 2 out of the 3 main characters from the film. Both pictures drawn and inked before being hand painted with sumi ink.

Fire and Ice: Teegra

I had originally wanted to do a scene with her standing with a jungle backdrop, but changed it while sketching and thought I would go with a pose from when she is first seen in the movie.

Fire and Ice

This week's theme was a challenge for me considering I wasn't completely familiar with "Fire and Ice" by Frank Frazetta. That and I typically don't do full bodies. Now in my second week in a row I've done 3/4 bodies. Kudos to this blog I guess because it's getting me out of my comfort zone of only painting faces. I had a great time looking at a lot of Frank Frazetta work for inspiration. The pose I used is based off of John Cassaday's cover art for Astonishing X-men #6. As always my picture is hand painted with sumi ink.

Frank Castle is, THE TERMINATOR

This was my idea from day one when the first theme was announced. Don't know why, just pictured the cover of the original movie but with one of my favorite comic characters of all time.
Frank Castle. Which, in my opinion has yet to see an honest adaptation to the big screen.
One day... Hopefully we will get to see it... (Fingers crossed)

"Calling Dick Tracy, Calling Dick Tracy"

I've always been a fan of Dick Tracy. As a kid I used to always watch the old cartoons when I went over to my Grandparents house. Naturally I love the Warren Beatty movie too. Visually it's stunning and for the time it was pretty impressive. Is Dick Tracy a true definition of a "pulp character"? Maybe, maybe not. Either way I wanted to do something different from what I normally do. I first traditionally sketched, then inked Tracy. Then I hand painted with yellow and black watercolor paints before I scanned it and digitally touched it up. Finally putting it against a background to make it pop.

A Shadow in Little China

My idea for this theme was a kind of sequel to Big Trouble in Little China, but with The Shadow, obviously.  The design of this poster was inspired by a poster for my favorite movie ever, Blade Runner (although Big Trouble comes in at a very close second), which just happens to be another 80's movie.

Painted in Photoshop CS5

I didn't know what I was gonna come up with, and then, at dinner, the "warehouse" song came on, and I had to get up and do my best Jennifer Beals... Sealed the deal.

Not Abe Froman: Sausage King of Chicago

This week's theme: "80's movies with comic book characters inserted as the movie actors"...If you can't already tell I took one of my favorite movies "Ferris Bueller's Day off" and added one of my favorite characters to draw/paint "Wolverine" and here you go. "Snikt, snikt Mr Rooney"

Hand painted with Sumi ink.
